Byron Black | Product Design Lead
Building products people trust, for work, wellness and play
For over a decade, I’ve designed for health, wellness, finance, and culture, spaces where design helps people feel less lost and more in control of what comes next.
From therapeutic tools to high-traffic systems, I blend strategy, interaction, and systems thinking to create experiences that are intuitive, useful, and when possible, a little fun.
Along the way, I’ve helped teams bring more structure to feedback, more room for research, and more momentum to good ideas. I’ve worked with Treyarch, AKQA, Capital One, Glo, and Big Health to design products people return to, rely on, and build into their everyday lives.
Outside work, I’m fueled by my incredible partner, sarcastic cats, and love for biking.
Process
Behavior first. I design from what people do, not what we assume.
Impact over noise. I focus where I add the most value, strategy, systems, or impact.
Fast and clear. Quick iteration helps teams move with clarity and intention.
Build the whole. I create connected systems that scale and feel human.
Share and evolve. I collaborate early with cross-functional teams to refine.
Details matter. Great outcomes come from care at every step, not just the final deliverable.
History
-
Actively seeking new opportunities to lead human-centered product design with a focus on health, wellness, and complex systems. Passionate about exploring how AI can simplify, personalize, and enhance digital experiences to create real impact and empower users.
-
At Big Health, I led the 0–1 design and launch of Care Navigator, creating a wellness dashboard that connects people to live mental health support when they need it most. I also redesigned the provider portal to support scaling our FDA-cleared digital therapeutics, making it easier for clinical teams to deliver care.
Across these products, I led a lightweight research practice focused on real user needs. By iterating on insights and validating with users and teams, I shaped a strategic direction that guided redesigns of onboarding, intake, and daily experiences. These changes improved early engagement, data quality, and aligned the team around helping people stay supported throughout their care journey.
-
I led 0→1 product design for platforms and features across health, finance, and logistics, creating user-centered experiences that could scale and evolve over time. From modernizing design systems to aligning delivery across teams, I focused on building clarity and consistency into every layer of the product. My work spanned UX, visual design, and design ops - helping teams drive adoption and retention. Clients included Glo (B2C wellness), Medable (clinical trial tech), Athenahealth (EHR), Pacific Life (financial services), Publicis Sapient (agency), and UPS (logistics).
-
I led the 0→1 design of the Digital Money Coaching platform - shaping both the core product experience and the outer layers of brand, tone, and trust. From designing intuitive coaching workflows to defining the look, feel, and voice of the product, I helped create a system built for real impact, long-term adoption, and national scale.
-
From 2015 to 2018, I led product, brand, and UX strategy across startups, fintech, and AAA games. I designed in-game UI systems for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, III, and IV, working closely with Treyarch to shape immersive player experiences. On the startup side, I partnered with early teams at Homezen, Remine, and others to refine product-market fit, drive launch readiness, and lift engagement through design. I also supported product design at established fintech platforms like Rapid Finance and Caribou, helping strengthen usability and conversion through UX. I also partnered with Nike, STX, Google, and the National Gallery of Art - designing across physical product, brand identity, and web experiences for both global and cultural institutions.
-
Over nearly a decade in agency roles, I led design and creative teams across mobile, brand, and digital platforms, shaping experiences for global brands and fast-moving industries. At AKQA, I directed Verizon’s mobile design system and retail POS. At SapientNitro, I contributed to large-scale launches for Coca-Cola, Cigna, Southwest, and more. At RP3, I helped reposition the agency through a digital-first rebrand. My early years at Rooftop built a strong foundation in creative direction and B2C storytelling across fashion, retail, and music.
Clients include: Verizon, Southwest, USPS, Bethsoft, Sprint, Citibank, Delsey, USA TODAY, Music & Arts and others.
